Spice And All Things Nice...

In a city where there is no dearth of good food, I found myself yet again seeking out an Indian restaurant even though I profess to not being a fan of Indian cuisine. Much of it though has to be attributed to the congeniality of the manager in Diya. We had met the gentleman at a sampling session and his pleasant disposition (and coupon handouts...heehee) had made this an inevitable trip.

Tucked amongst the dozen of ethnic restaurants in the basement level of Roppongi Hills, Diya's sizable interior is like a dream amidst the crammed racket of Tokyo although personally, I lament at the waste of space. Besides an intricately carved Indian statue taking centre stage, the restaurant's decor is relatively simplistic with tables lining only the perimeter of the dining area.

As for the menu, we decided to opt for the more palatable traditional fare. Crisp and savoury, the piping hot Samosas were a great opening to our meal. The next appetiser of deep fried vegetable fritters though failed to live up to the momentum of its predecessor. It consisted basically of some hapless looking root vegetables gelled with some coagulated flour and water, bland and uninspired food at its worst. Our order of chicken tikka, vegetarian curry, garlic and butter nann soon followed suit. Generously proportioned but relatively mild, they failed to rev up our appetites and so we decided to doggy bag the remains of our meal...And boy, were we glad! The flavours from the overnight curry mellowed as it was being re-heated, leaving in its wake a heady aroma that had the two of us fighting over who should get the bigger serving.

Though I am still not a convert, I am now completely sold on Indian take-out next time when moi's not cooking;)
