For Italian food lovers on the prowl, Elio is your best bet for its robust Southern Italian fare served in a homely ambience. Reminiscent of an Italian tavern with its raw brick walls, the place is ever so sprightly with animated conversations all going on at the same time. And sprucing up the walls are coloured and monochrome photos of of Elio playing host to a bevy of celebrities, including Paolo Bulgari, Angelica Visconti, grand-daughter of shoe legend Salvatore Ferragamo, Giorgio Armani and the list goes on...
Putting our dinner fate into the hands of the affable head waiter, Roberto, our meals there had always been grand affairs. Fretting over the menu is a thing of the past as Roberto is on hand to conjure up combos of our fave antipasto, pastas and desserts! Three cheers for Roberto!
Our usual platter of antipasto includes the rich and creamy Vitello Tonnato, which is thinly sliced veal in tuna sauce laced with anchovy, the classic Caprese consisting of freshly flown-in Italian tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella cheese and baked sliced eggplant stuffed with smoked Scamorza.
The hearty pasta dishes are the soul of this bistro. Here, one gets to savour a wide range of diverse pasta dishes based on seasonal ingredients that are sourced directly from Italy.
The desserts here are worth incurring the wrath of your waistline though strictly speaking, I do not have much of a sweet tooth. Nevertheless, the bittersweet Tiramisu and the strawberries and cream filled Mille Foglie will never fail to enthrall me. So for a taste of Southern Italy, book your flight to an epicurean experience with Elio.
