Never Judge A Book By Its Cover...

The first impression we have of Cogito was actually quite negative. With its paper table overlays and paper napkins, surely this is not what one would have expected from a French restaurant, much less one with a Michelin star.

The decor though fared much better as it channels rustic country charm with dark wood and a fireplace bedeck with medallions, old books and photo frames. The skylight above lets in natural light and accord a sunny and cheery disposition to the otherwise dark interior.

Starting off promisingly were our starters of foie gras and scallops. Though my scallops were lovingly wrapped in thin strips of fennel with a drizzle of light dressing, my other half's foie gras with slices of smoked duck was the highlight. The sweetness of the marmalade was in perfect unison to the creaminess of the foie gras. I could only look on forlornly, berating myself silently for my stupidity:( The mushroom potage was also top grade with the smell of mushrooms fragrant and distinctive.

Game is a specialty at Cogito as the meat is said to be hunted by the owner himself and brought straight to the kitchen. We even witnessed his humongous hummer-like four-wheel drive parked right at the entrance.

My other half's venison hamburger steak was hearty french food with the rich sauce in symphony to the heaviness of the flesh. I had to pass on that though as I could not bring myself to eat sweet doe-eyed Bambi:( My order of the rack of lamb was divine too and came deboned with a thin layer of fats crisp and slightly charred still clinging to the bones. Hmmm, it was an ultimate delight gnawing on them.

For sweets, my other half once again had the upper hand. His order of flaky apple pie was superbly light and fluffy while my chocolate cake was more of a run-of-the-mill kind of dessert:(

Eventually, Cogito managed to cast aside its unfavourable first impression simply by letting its food do the talking. However, if there is one lesson to be learnt from this experience, it is to mirror my other half's order 99.99% of the time.
