All Battered Up...

Since Fukamachi, I am not sure if I will ever blow that kind of dough again on tempura as I feel that the dish is relatively straightforward to prepare and should not warrant such a premium. And Tempura Karasawa, a tempura joint endorsed by gourmands Joanne & Jimmy offers up these ubiquitous prawn fritters at recession friendly prices that are hard to resist. According a zen-like vibe with its bamboo shoji sliding doors, this unpretentious family owned restaurant with its personable service and freshly made tempura comes as good as it gets.

Heading there on a rare cloudless Saturday afternoon (we are currently in the mid of an abominable rainy season), I decided on a tempura set while my other half went with the deluxe ten-don set with kakiage. Lightly battered and sizzlingly hot, I could find no fault with the sweet crustacean cocooned within. My other half's kakiage though, was the highlight with its appealing olio of shrimps, bay scallops, asparagus and broad beans. I made a mental note to go for the same dish next time round as it amazes me how the bloke just has this uncanny knack for always picking the right dish!

So star or no star, as long as the food sticks to a couple of elemental rules, it gets my vote:)
