Indulge Your Senses...

Despite having had both Dim Sum and dinner there, I am still undecided with my verdict for Sense. Our initial visit for the weekend Dim Sum set menu had me gushing about my new pet place. Subsequent visits, however, had diminished that enthusiasm a wee bit...

The weekend Dim Sum menu includes an appetite whetting salad with a piquant dressing, several steamed and fried varieties of these delectable treats, a wholesome double-boiled soup Cantonese style, a choice of either clay pot rice or porridge and dessert. An interval before the soup course allows one to order an assortment of Dim Sum from a list of 30 items. Worthy of mention here is the fried shrimp dumplings with mango sauce. Crunchy and addictive, the shrimp filling is as fresh as can be. The flaky Char Siew puffs are yummy too with a modern twist. Thanks to the subtle hints of pineapple bits, they smell heavenly, fruity and savoury.

As for dinner, somehow, I found the experience wanting. We had the Peking duck, chilli prawns, vegetables and soup noodles with shredded duck from the remnants of our Peking duck. The chilli prawns, though of a jumbo size, sadly did not pack a punch. And the rest of the dishes although passable were pricey. Don't even start me on their selection of champagnes and wines which also gravitate towards the unaffordable level:(

Regardless of spending, parking at the Mandarin Oriental is limited to only 2 hours. Once we had the misfortune of staying in excess of 8 minutes and were promptly presented with a 300JPY tab despite running up a hefty bill at their restaurant. It is no doubt a paltry amount but it shows a pettiness on the hotel's part.

Albeit the inconsistencies in its fare, Sense is still recommended if you are on the lookout for a satisfying Dim Sum brunch. So, head there for the weekend and indulge your senses...
